4 Things To Do Before Having an Online Job Interview

The e-recruitment phenomenon indicates a trend shift in the hiring process. Besides much cheaper than offline recruitment, e-recruitment also helps employers gain more employees from other cities or even other countries. Therefore, employers have a bigger chance to reach bright talents from around the world.

In Indonesia, several big companies such as PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia, PT Kereta Api Indonesia, PT Angkasa Pura Solusi, and Indofood Group already held e-recruitment to hire their employees.

During the e-recruitment process, an online interview burdens the applicants more often than an aptitude test, for example. Here four tips for nailing a successful online job interview:

  1. Make sure the internet connection and the tools are in good condition

An online interview is conducted through a video conference application. Before having the interview, you have to make sure your device and internet connection are in their best conditions. The poor or unstable connection will only result in miscommunication and misunderstanding.

To avoid any distraction caused by the device failure during the interview, make sure the audio and camera settings work. Also, do double-check your devices, smartphone or computer, if the batteries are fully charged.

  1. Choose a proper place and background

Make sure that during an online interview, you are out of the crowd and noisy place. Webcams mics are surprisingly sensitive. A noisy place can lead to a misunderstanding—the best place to have an online interview is the quiet one. Better to have the interview in your private room because you can shut out any distractions than in a public place such as a coffee shop.

Also, consider using proper interview background as it can sway the interviewer's opinions. Choose an inconspicuous background to keep the interviewer focus on you. It would be best if you also consider the lighting. Make sure that the room has bright lighting so the interviewer can see you clearly.

  1. Make your appearance neat and complete

Just because you are interviewed online, it does not mean that you can dress casually. It is necessary to look professional to show your professionalism. Even though the interviewer won’t see anything you wear from your waist down, it does not mean that you only have to dress up the upper half of your body. Wearing a complete neat outfit will strengthen your morale during the interview.

  1. Practice the interview before facing the real one

A practice is a good way to do something better, including an online interview. You can ask your friends or relatives to accompany you to practice an interview. It can also make you more confident and reduce anxiety during the interview.

If you feel too nervous before the interview, you can make some question predictions and write down the answers. It helps you to answer the interviewer’s questions smoothly.
